ORIGINS OF CQB
The origins of modern close-quarters combat lie in the combat methods pioneered by Assistant Commissioner William E. Fairbairn of the Shanghai Municipal Police, the police force of the Shanghai International Settlement (1854–1943).
Modern firearm CQB tactics were developed in the 1970s as “close-quarters battle” by Western counterterrorist special forces units following the 1972 Munich massacre. After this incident the SAS developed their Counter Revolutionary Warfare Wing (CRW). The flashbangs that are now used were first developed by the SAS and deployed on the 1977 Lufthansa hijacking rescue by GSG9 assisted by Alastair Morrison and Barry Davies of the British SAS. Several units started to train in Counter Terrorism tactics including the Special Air Service, Delta Force, GSG 9, GIGN, and Joint Task Force 2.
